The league was first formed in 1898 as was the first ever national league in Italian football (campione d'Italia). Nicknamed "La Serie A" or "Il Campionato", the league has been home to the greatest players in the history of football and formed great clubs who have dominated the domestic and international stage.
The league changed in 1929 when it was restructured and divided into two leagues of sixteen teams each; the two winners would face each other in a two-legged final to declare the champion. Serie A's heyday was its golden age in the 1980s and 1990s, when it was widely recognized as the best league in the world, luring global superstars like Diego Maradona, Roberto Baggio and Ronaldo, and any number of other icons.
The tactical and defensive acumen of Italian football was repeated, establishing Serie A as the most defensive of the most tactical national leagues. Its defensive "catenaccio" system of play was widely emulated and developed throughout the world and its Italian neorealism inspired lesser football-playing nations.
Format Serie A is a 20-team competition which they play each other twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 games per season. The season usually begins in late August and runs to late May, with teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away).
A team is awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. At the end of the season, the club with the highest aggregation of points has the honour of being crowned Serie A champion, taking possession of the Scudetto in the process. The top four teams gain entry into the Champions League, and fifth and sixth place earn Europa League places.
The lower three teams are relegated to Serie B and the top two Serie B teams plus the winner of a play-off promoted to ensure a competition of 20 teams. This system promotes competitive balance and allows clubs to move between divisions based on performance.
Juventus are the most dominant team in Serie A history, having won the league title 36 times, and have enjoyed golden periods in multiple eras, making them Italy's most powerful club. From their early years to the present day, almost every decade has brought with it some form of modern day success, and as a result they can lay serious claim to the Maglia Azzurra royalty that defines Italian football.
Inter Milan: 20-time Serie A winners, most recently winning the 2023-24 title after finishing second to title winners Napoli in the 2024-25 season. Their cross town rivals AC Milan have also won 19 titles making the Milan derby one of football's most known derbies.
Napoli have now established themselves as a new force in the modern game with a fourth Serie A crown in 2024-25 to go with their past successes in 2022-23 and during the reign of Diego Maradona in 1987 and 1990. Thriving under the management of Antonio Conte, they are the most successful southern Italian side.
Apart from these, several other teams (like AS Roma, Lazio, or Fiorentina, also including 'historical winning clubs' Torino and Bologna) have their own Dynastics, contributing to the culture of the Serie A.
Napoli are the defending champions heading into the 2025-26 season, and they will be looking to capitalise on their late title win in 2024-25 under Antonio Conte. A commercial blend of tactical discipline and ferocious attacking verve with key men such as Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku make them very strong favourites to win the Scudetto again.
Inter Milan will be looking to win back their title, having been pipped to top spot in 2024-25 by just a single point. Never mind that Champions League final appearance, they will set their sights on domestic hegemony with a young and exciting squad including Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez.
AC Milan want to challenge for the title again after their recent embarrassment, while Juventus want to build their dynasty once again under new coach. Atalanta still punching above their weight with their attacking style and European knowhow.
AS Roma and Lazio are considered to be the capital city's hopes, Fiorentina and Bologna want to achieve European places through maintaining some measure of form.
Serie A is a unique footballing spectacle that combines tactical innovation with fervent home support and storied stadiums. Each and every game offers the chance to see some of the world's best players playing out their trade in one of the game's most traditional and tactically innovative environments.
The league's defensive glory and strategic aptitude result in exciting matches, where every little play counts. With tactical showdowns featuring some of the world's top managers and showcase matches designed to inspire and surprise, every one of those years has been filled with unmissable moments of drama on a football pitch.

The 2024-25 Serie A title race ended in dramatic fashion as Napoli clinched their fourth Serie A title winning on the final day of the season to pip defending champions Inter Milan by one point. The title race went down to the final day on 23 May 2025, when both teams played at the same time in their final games, creating an extraordinary atmosphere as Napoli beat Cagliari 2–0 while Inter's 2–0 victory over Como was in vain. Antonio Conte celebrated becoming the first coach to win Serie A with three different clubs as after past successes with Juventus and Inter Milan, he described this title as "the most unexpected, the most difficult and the most beautiful" of his career. The two key signings of the summer for Conte, Scott McTominay, with a brilliant bicycle kick, in the 42nd minute and Romelu Lukaku with a clinical left foot finish on 51 minutes, scored the all important goals with both players playing an important role in the season. Napoli's was especially noteworthy because they did it without any European responsibilities, because they hadn't qualified for the continent for the rounds the season before, whereas Inter were going to the Champions League final against PSG. The title win resulted in huge celebrations at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with the city of Naples seeing scenes akin to those after their previous title wins in 1987, 1990 and 2023. Future The 2025–26 season will see Sassuolo, Pisa, and Cremonese promoted to Serie A, which will take place from 23 August 2025 to 24 May 2026.
